Span Arts is inviting West Wales based artists, musicians, creative practitioners and or collectives to create new work for our Summer project Love stories to Nature – Straeon / Cariad at Natur. We are looking for artistic responses to the call for the arts to help contribute to recovery, wellbeing and help to solve the climate crisis ‘by telling stories that persuade people to ‘fall in love with nature again’ and prompt people to get outdoors and enjoy Pembrokeshire.
We will select up to 4 artists to create an artistic response, in any art form, that begins a conversation between artists and the people of Pembrokeshire about nature, the environment, sustainability and wellbeing.
We are open to applications from individuals, partnerships or collectives who are able to creatively respond to the brief and provide a way for people to take part.
We are looking for blended proposals; by which we mean projects which take place online or in person, or ideally a mixture of both so that audiences/participants may take part digitally or physically, indoors or outdoors.
We invite you to suggest ideas you would like to grow together. This project will give the support you need to bring your ideas to life quickly or to trial new ideas with the public.
The SPAN team will make things very simple and will:
- Help to realise the community facing element of the project
- Find you useful spaces for the in person bits of projects (the SPAN studio space or under our new stretch tent etc.)
- Provide digital support, materials and equipment for practical or online activities
- Arrange insurances and COVID safety.
- Publicise the project
All work must be completed by the end of September 2021 and respond to the following:
- telling stories that persuade people to ‘fall in love with nature again’
- Plant/sow creative ideas about sustainability, recovery, wellbeing and/or climate change
- provide a way for audiences/participants/beneficiaries to take part
- experiment with the notion of a ‘blended’ art project
Fee: Up to £1000 per commission based on a daily rate of £200 per day.
All fees are inclusive of VAT, travel expenses and material costs.

Selection Process
Successful applicants will be selected through demonstration of their aptitude for the roles against the following criteria:
- Quality of the proposal and creative response to the brief (Innovation, originality, relevance)
- Quality and suitability of proposed engagement work
- Experience (Artistic track record, previous inter-generational and community work)
- Deliverability (Project plan and capacity to deliver).

Project Context
SPAN is about to embark on a community consultation to find out what people want from community arts in Pembrokeshire post-COVID. We are keen to open up a conversation about how the arts can play a transformative role in the recovery of Pembrokeshire and help to solve the climate crisis.
Sir Mark Rylance has called on the arts to help solve the climate crisis by telling stories that persuade people to “fall in love with nature again” and prompt government to back green policies.
Mark Rylance: ‘I feel like we’ve got to fall in love with nature again; we do incredible things for each other when we fall in love.’
Rylance said although “we’re not lacking information about what we need to do” to help the climate crisis, “we also really need the arts to remind us how … we are part of the same family as … the nature around us”.
Here in Pembrokeshire, we are lucky enough to be surrounded by the constant wonder of the coast, sea and our big skies. We think that artists and people from Pembrokeshire know best how to share their love of the environment in a way that can influence others.
We want to enable artists to sow some new ideas, that will help us to build back better for the arts in Pembrokeshire post-COVID.
The project is funded by the Arts Council of Wales.
Availability
The project will be delivered between July and September 2021, exact dates to be confirmed with successful applicants on recruitment.
Fees
All fees are inclusive of travel expenses and material costs.
SPAN is looking to SEED new ideas and conversations that help us to begin to understand what’s next. If projects prove the potential for growth, SPAN will work hard to secure more funds to fulfil it’s artistic vision.
Eligibility
The brief is open to those who are UK residents.
DBS check – all successful applicants should be registered with the Government DBS update service register and be able to provide details that can be checked against this register. Enhanced checks may be required if you will be working with children or vulnerable adults.
